Photography Club

Sun City Texas

Who We Are

The objective of the Sun City Texas Photography Club is to help its members become better photographers and subsequently produce better images.  This is primarily accomplished through extensive education consisting of monthly programs, critiquing of photographs, workshops and field trips.  The programs, workshops and field trips are varied enough to be of interest to photographers with all levels of expertise.  Essentially, the concentration is on the photographic “end product” regardless of whether the image capture was by film or digital camera.  There are discussions of digital darkroom techniques that can be used to optimize images.

What We Do and Don’t Do

The club meets monthly in the Activity Center on the third Thursday of each month at 1:30.  Member-based educational programs include photo-basics, elements of composition and print making in the digital darkroom.  There is a “Subject of the Month” where members submit images for constructive comments (i.e. how can the maker improve the image). Negative critiques and comments are not provided.  Photographers of all levels are encouraged to display their work in Sun City and the local community.

The features and functions of digital cameras are not talked about or taught. The Computer Club’s Digital Camera SIG provides that component.

Workshops

There are five to six workshops a year.  There is a wide range of subjects including mat selection and framing, individual portfolio reviews by an expert panel which is done on a one on one basis, panorama photography, a model shoot and considerations involved in making a photographic image.

Field Trips

The club has two types of field trips.  Five or six are planned with a leader for large groups and three or four casual field trips without a leader for small groups.  All are day trips.  Club members will be on the Bluebonnet trail in March, walking the cactus trail in April and photographing fireworks in July - just to mention a few.

Yearly Activity Calendar

The club’s yearly activity calendar is e-mailed to all members and is on the website.  The date of monthly meetings, subject of the month, monthly programs, field trips and workshops are  shown for the entire year.

Volunteers

The club needs members who will help in various ways so the club can achieve excellence in all of the activities planned during the year. Volunteering to help with programs and activities makes your membership much more educational and enjoyable.  One will become more knowledgeable and meet new friends while helping the club.  When the club asks for help, please say, “YES!”

Communications

Sun City 2007 Calendar

Visual Arts Club

The Sun City Texas Photography Club is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Sun City Texas Visual Arts Club (VAC).  Members enjoy full membership benefits of, and may participate in all VAC activities.  There are no Photography Club dues; however, joining the VAC is a requirement.  The Photography Club has representation on the VAC Board.

The VAC operates the art studio for all members.  Of interest to photographers is the availability and instruction on the use of the large mat cutter in the studio.  They sponsor art exhibits, workshops and other programs.  Also, there is a library with books and magazines related to photography.  The VAC studio is an outstanding facility.  Please check it out.  Their website is also one of the best in Sun City.  It is at http://sctxvisualartsclub.org/ .
