Competitions Interest Group
Photography Club
Sun City Texas
Links to Award Winning Photography Web Sites
Listed below are those non-club photo competitions that one or more of the Competitions Group’s members has identified. A very brief synopsis of the requirements, dates, formats, and a link to more information (either a website or a publication) is included.
(As background, the Competitions Interest Group is open to all members of the Photography Club who are willing to participate in outside competitions on a regular basis, but not necessarily in ALL of the below listed competitions. Those who attend the Competitions Interest Group meetings are expected to bring an image or images to each meeting for serious comment by the rest of the group. (Translated: this means that the group is not a “spectator sport,” but is a mutual assistance group of people who are willing to help and be helped.))
Our goal is to meet from 3 to 5 pm on the second Wednesday of each month in the VAC Studio.

State Fair of Texas
Deadline: July 2008
Here’s a contest that ought to be appropriate for everyone in the Competitions Group.
It’s a long way off thus giving us plenty of time to prepare. The format is pretty standard from year to year, so although we don’t have the booklet for 2008, a previous year’s book will suffice for now. They don’t change Categories or Themes very often, but did so in 2006, so if it is changed, it ought not to affect your work. Most, but not all of the Categories try to be something that is appropriate to Texas. There are many categories in Color, Black and White, and Creative. (20 in Color plus a Best of Show, 8 in BW plus a Best of Show, and 1 Creative. Images must have been taken in the previous 18 months. No frames. No wire. No glass or plexi-glass. All images must be mounted on a backing that is 11” x 14”. No restriction on image size, other than the minimum size of the print is 5” x 7”. (but on the 11x14 backing) Images can either be top-matted or not matted. Submission can be by mail. Entry fee is low: $4.00 per image unless you’re 70 years or older when it’s free. Limit is two entries per person. Prizes are Rosettes and Ribbons. More information can be obtained by accessing the website: www.bigtex.com then going to Creative Arts and then Photography
You can submit your name to a mailing list and they’ll send you a Handbook in June.
I have the Handbooks for 2005 and 2006 for those who want more information right now. Do this on the above website.
I think many of us are not aware of outside competitions, are not really pointing toward a specific competition, but ought to be able to use the State Fair as a good first starter.
