Competition SIG

Vickie Martin , coordinator -- Our objective is to help photographers who want to improve their skills through competition. We judge and critique images within the SIG and encourage each other to submit images to outside competitions and exhibits. We explore what makes a good competition image and learn how to judge and run a competition. Click here for awards and competition winners.

Nature Photography SIG

Roy McDonald, coordinator  -- Our objective is to capture better nature images by improving our technical and aesthetic skills.  At our meetings we bring images of a subject that the group previously selected.  We discuss what we might have done better in making the photograph and in optimizing it in Photoshop to produce the best possible image.

Introduction to Photography SIG

Wes Odell, coordinator --The curriculum in this SIG will be a modified Boot Camp I (Photo Basics), Boot Camp II (Light and Composition), and also the Basics of Photoshop Elements, enough to get you from capture to print or display without a lot of fuss and extensive learning of more than the basic functions. Those with "point and shoot cameras" will have a different track, less technical because of the fewer number of camera functions, than those with SLRs. "Point and Shoot" is defined for this SIG’s purposes as a camera that does not have Aperture Priority. We will have two meetings each month, one (with two tracks) for Photo Basics, and the other one for Light and Composition. The intent is for people to attend this SIG one cycle which will take about four or five months and then move on to other SIGs such as Intermediate, or Competitions, or Photoshop Elements and others. In other words, the plan is that this SIG does not become a long-term venue for an individual such as with other SIGs. The SIG is not appropriate for those who are advanced level photographers.

Photography Society of America SIG

Holly Moore, Coordinator -- The PSA, (Photographic Society of America), Special Interest Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:00 in the studio. Initially, the SIG will concentrate its efforts on Inter-Club Competitions in the Electronic Image Division, with the possibility of expanding into other PSA Division Inter-Club Competitions in 2012/13. These are international competitions with clubs from around the world. The Photography Club is a "Club Member" of PSA, so we will be competing on behalf of the Sun City Photo Club.  Everyone in the club is welcome. No one is required to join PSA as an individual, although members of the SIG are encouraged to become members.

A Special Interest Group (aka SIG) is a group of people with a common interest in a segment of photography, photo editing or printing.  A SIG can be created if members are interested in forming, organizing and running it.  SIGs will come and go as interests change.

SIG meetings will normally be held in the Photography Club Studio (located in the Crafts Center next to the Social Center).  The members of a SIG will decide when it is to meet and how frequently.  Check the Club Calendar here for dates, times and details.

Many of the SIGs have excellent information their members have compiled.  These articles, notes, links, etc. are listed under Technical Topics/Useful Links on the home page.  Click here for the Technical Topics/Useful Links page.

Studio Lighting SIG

Studio Lighting is not a SIG in the normal fashion inasmuch as it does not have a Leader; does not have Programs and Education: does not provide Training to use the equipment; and does not have regular Meetings. It does schedule time for use of the lighting equipment for the first Wednesday of each month from 1 to 4 PM for those who know how to use the equipment without having to reserve time in the Studio.
